2019-03-27 19:40pm 45m Evening Sitting

Type: Awareness of Breath
Read Time: 2 mins

Preparation

The meditation was the first part of a local evening class at a Buddhist center. I’ve not been since the Metta Bhavana Session session a couple of weeks back due to work commitments and illness.

It was good to be back this week and the session was awareness of breath. (It alternates between this and Metta Bhavana)

As the class began we did a few minutes of walking meditation. This took the form of walking around the outer edge of the room. This carried on for around eight minutes before we stopped to begin the awareness of breath practice.

Review

The main session started with a short but deliberate minute to settle in before any instructions we were given. I gathered a few breaths and then proceeded to the body scan when instructed. Starting from the contact points with the floor we worked up through the body in an orderly fashion.

This took several minutes and I found myself enjoying the concentration and slower pace my focus was also very good. My mind was well settled in this period and did not find distractions.

We moved on to breathing awareness, and specifically counting on the out breath, “1” to “10” before restarting. Being used to counting both breaths, I added noting “in”, and “out” internally along with the count.

This gave me very steady attention and for a good few minutes, I remained like this. As we moved on to the next section we were counting before the in breath. As before I used “in”, and “out” internally along with the count. Towards the end of this session, some sleepiness accompanied feelings of deep stillness within the body. Up until this point I had had an unwavering attention, so it was a little annoying, but I was still pleased overall.

As we entered the final section - awareness of breath with no count, the sleepiness continued to be a problem. Two or three times in the final section I caught myself about to fall asleep. Overall a good session
