2019-04-15 7:42am 35m Morning Sitting

Type: Awareness of Breath
Read Time: 2 mins

This morning I had decided to wait until the youngest was on his way to nursery. I set up with some essential oil. My eldest wanted to join in. She had grabbed a pair of her own cushions and sat next to me. I explained that she could sit with me and quietly watch her breath if she liked. Knowing that thirty-five minutes was way too long, I said she can sneak out when she had had enough.

  • Peaceful mind and more focus
  • Mastering Checking
  • Mastering Dullness
Possible Distractions
  • Noisy child sat next to me!
  • Seated on a pair of cushions on the floor - cross legged.

Upon starting I didn’t find having her here a distraction, despite her making noises and moving around, I was in a nice calm place. In fact, it was quite interesting to observe this calm while doing my preparations and letting the other noises wash over me. I found this caused some pleasant tingling sensations in the head. I believe this may be called ASMR. I’ve had this a few times, often quite mildly appearing, during meditation.

After finishing the preparations fairly slowly I moved on to the body scan. This was a slow process, with hindsight I think a little dullness was present. My eldest left the room about halfway through and I finished the scan over a couple of minutes. Moving to the breath I found a calm stillness which was very enjoyable.

However, my focus was not as good as it has been recently. I quite often found, and started to correct this with checking. I then bought my attention to look more closely at the breathing sensations at the nose. I didn’t label the in and out breath internally today. Just the awareness of breathing seemed to be enough. When checking caught that I was moving towards thinking or forgetting I would focus and really closely watch and try to see how many sensations I could observe on the breathing cycle.

I noted that the breathing awareness was most often in its own stream of awareness and the checking along with other thinking or distractions, happens in a separate stream of consciousness. This is good I think from a progression perspective, but I find that this “checking stream or awareness”, is much more susceptible to thinking or distractions.

I think this will be the place to focus for a good few sessions to come.
