I was awake and downstairs with the children since about 6am. Having a slower start and a coffee put me in a good mood, although I was a little tired having had to get up earlier today. About ten to seven the chance came to go into my office. I prepared the essential oil and cushions in the usual way
There was a good focus today, I got through the preparations fairly quickly, and it felt appropriate to also do the body scan at a fairly quick pace. Between these two initial steps, I’d estimate it took two or three minutes.
Starting with the planned counting I was pleasantly surprised to find a good focus and diminished thinking. Keeping attention to breath was effortless. I did, however, have to repeat a number a few times. Anytime I was unsure of the count, I dropped back to the last number I was certain of doing. After a couple of times of this happening. I made a conscious effort to pay more attention here.
Another pleasing factor was that because the thinking was reduced, I was able to pay good attention to the breathing sensations. I’ve noticed for me they are one of the first things which can drop away.
After finishing both sets of forty breaths I dropped the counting altogether. Inevitably the focus dropped a little, this was a slightly more relaxing end to a rather mechanical session. I think I will do a couple of sessions in this format, the benefit of the increased focus was reduced background thinking. I feel like I’m close to where I was before the break now, but with some new insights.
