I woke early this morning at about 5:50am. I had a good energy and I came downstairs to sit quietly. I enjoyed about 20 minutes of quiet time before my eldest awoke and came in. We sat for a little while before I went off to meditate.

  • Peaceful mind and more focus
  • More presense in daily life
  • Stay within the counting. Count to 40 after the out-breath. When that is finished, count to 40, counting before the in-breath. Any remaining time is to be used on breathing with no count
Possible Distractions
  • Children interupting, or making lots of noise
  • Seated on a pair of cushions on the floor - cross legged.


This morning I got through the preparations well, I knew that I wanted to do the same as yesterday to exercise some discipline. The body scan was also fairly good. I held large parts of my body in awareness in turn and finished by holding the whole body in awareness for a little while.

Moving on to the planned two sets of forty breaths, I had a good focus. There was some thinking, but it was not regular, and it did not ever interrupt my counting. Today I paid better attention to the count, and in this respect, it was also a very good session.

After finishing the count to forty after the out-breath, I did the same with the in-breath. Again there was a good focus and I stuck to the task without being distracted. Upon completing the second set, I changed to just having awareness of the breath and the sensations at the nose tip. After about a minute I checked the timer. This was not out of frustration, but there was an issue yesterday where it did not finish properly. I saw five minutes remaining.

I saw out this last five minutes and even had a fairly good awareness without the count. The session wasn’t particularly enjoyable though. There was a fair amount of energy today, that although not used on thinking, did at least leave me a little restless. This might be the extra energy from fasting perhaps. The session was also a little mechanical, as, by design, I’d intended to focus on increasing the discipline. On the plus side, there where signs that I can develop checking while practising with the count. I’ll plan to do a similar session tomorrow morning.
